Yesterday Shakesville, one of my favorite sources of news and criticism, pointed me to<\/a> an amusing online tool: the Gender Analyzer<\/a>.\u00a0 This idiot website reads a website and somehow comes to a conclusion on the gender of the writer.\u00a0 Yesterday, it was 62% certain that I am a woman.\u00a0 Today it is even more certain (65%).\u00a0 Who knows what it will say when I update again?<\/p>\n

I am unspeakably amused by this.\u00a0 Doubly so as the guy who that he can walk into a gay bar wearing a skirt, nails painted red, and more jewelry than anyone else there \u2026 and be mistaken for straight.<\/p>\n

Now, the reality of the matter is somewhat more complicated than that.\u00a0 I am male bodied, and generally pass as cisgendered.\u00a0 I don\u2019t actually identify as male, I just let people assume that when explaining that I\u2019m third-gender\/genderqueer in a magical-transgressive-shamanic-liminal-brainfuck sense is just way too much work \u2026 which, admittedly, is most of the time.\u00a0 In the simplest terms my gender identity is not so much \u201cmale\u201d as \u201cwitch\u201d.\u00a0 Of course that\u2019s too much for most people to people to parse, let alone a program trained on a measly 2000 cherry-picked blogs.<\/p>\n

Further, as Melissa points out, a legit AI experiment would explain more about the rubrics in play.\u00a0 As it is, it reads to me as some sort of bizarre internet gender-shaming devise.\u00a0 It\u2019s also pretty damn clueless.\u00a0 For reference, as I was composing this digression I checked out how several of my favorite bloggers rate:<\/p>\n

\n

* Rufus Opus is \u201cquite gender neutral<\/a>\u201d but also probably (52%) a woman.\u00a0 Which is odd, because he always struck me as fairly butch.<\/p>\n

* Scylla rates almost identically<\/a> (51%) to RO.\u00a0 Right this time, though only barely.<\/p>\n

* The Wild Hunt is also identified correctly<\/a>, though they\u2019re only 65% sure.<\/p>\n

* The Tiger Beatdown is probably a man<\/a>, but also \u201cquite gender neutral\u201d \u2026 despite the majority of contributors to the front page being women.<\/p>\n

* Deborah is also correctly identified, and they\u2019re somehow much more certain<\/a> about her (75%)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
